2025 CPT code 73723

Magnetic resonance (eg, proton) imaging, any joint of lower extremity; without contrast material(s), followed by contrast material(s) and further sequences

For MRI of any lower extremity joint without contrast only, use 73721. For MRI of any lower extremity joint with contrast only, use 73722. For MRI of the lower extremity other than a joint, use 73718-73720.

Modifiers such as 26 (professional component), TC (technical component), 59 (distinct procedural service), and laterality modifiers (LT, RT) may be applicable depending on the specific circumstances and payer guidelines.

Medical necessity for 73723 must be supported by documentation demonstrating the clinical need for the MRI study. The documentation should link the symptoms, signs, or clinical findings to the need for imaging to diagnose or evaluate a specific condition affecting a lower extremity joint.

The radiologist or radiology technician positions the patient, operates the MRI scanner, and acquires the images. The radiologist then interprets the images, analyzes the findings, and prepares a written report.

In simple words: An MRI of a joint in your lower extremity (leg) is performed.First, pictures are taken without dye. Then, a special dye is injected to enhance the images, and more pictures are taken. This helps the doctor see the joint clearly and diagnose any problems.

This diagnostic procedure involves magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of any joint in the lower extremity. Initially, images are acquired without contrast material. Subsequently, a contrast agent is administered, and further sequences of images are obtained. The procedure helps visualize the joint structures and tissues in detail, aiding in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of various conditions.

Example 1: A patient presents with persistent knee pain and swelling after a fall. An MRI of the knee without and with contrast is ordered (73723) to evaluate for ligament tears, meniscus injuries, or other internal derangements., A patient with ankle instability undergoes an MRI of the ankle without and with contrast (73723) to assess the integrity of the ligaments and surrounding soft tissues., A patient experiences chronic hip pain. An MRI of the hip without and with contrast (73723) is performed to evaluate for labral tears, arthritis, or other hip joint pathologies.

The medical record should include the physician's order for the MRI, the patient's relevant history and physical exam findings, the reason for the study, and the radiologist's interpretation report.
