Medical necessity for a CT scan of the abdomen without contrast must be established based on the patient's presenting symptoms, medical history, and clinical findings. The documentation should clearly indicate why the CT scan is necessary to evaluate, diagnose, or manage the patient's condition.

The radiology provider is responsible for preparing the patient, positioning them on the CT scanner table, and obtaining the cross-sectional images of the abdomen which are then displayed on a monitor.A radiologic technician often performs the procedure, and a radiologist interprets the images and provides an analysis.

In simple words: A CT scan of your belly area is taken to help figure out what's going on inside. No special dye is used during this scan.

This code represents a computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen performed without the use of contrast material. The procedure involves obtaining cross-sectional images of the abdomen to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of abdominal conditions.

Example 1: A patient presents with abdominal pain and bloating. To investigate the cause of the symptoms, a CT scan of the abdomen without contrast is ordered to rule out conditions such as appendicitis or bowel obstruction., A patient with a history of kidney stones experiences flank pain. A CT scan of the abdomen without contrast is performed to evaluate for the presence of new or recurrent stones., Following a motor vehicle accident, a patient complains of abdominal discomfort. A CT scan without contrast is ordered to assess for internal injuries, such as bleeding or organ damage.

Documentation should include the patient's relevant medical history, the reason for the CT scan, the interpretation of the images by the radiologist, and any diagnoses made based on the scan.
