2025 CPT code 76883

Comprehensive ultrasound of one or more nerves and accompanying structures throughout their entire anatomic course in one extremity, including real-time cine imaging with image documentation.

Code 76883 should only be used for a comprehensive evaluation. Use of code 76882 is appropriate for limited assessments.Modifiers 26 (professional component) and TC (technical component) may be appended as appropriate.

Modifiers 26 and TC may be applied as clinically appropriate.

The medical necessity for 76883 is established when there is clinical suspicion of nerve pathology requiring comprehensive evaluation such as suspected nerve compression, trauma, or neuropathy.Symptoms may include pain, numbness, weakness, and altered sensation in the affected extremity.

The provider prepares the patient, applies gel, and uses the ultrasound transducer to image the nerve(s) and surrounding structures.Real-time cine imaging is acquired and documented. Interpretation of the images is also included.

IMPORTANT:Code 76882 (limited ultrasound) should not be used in conjunction with 76883.For spectral and color Doppler evaluation of the extremities, use 93925, 93926, 93930, 93931, 93970, or 93971 as appropriate.

In simple words: The doctor uses ultrasound to take detailed pictures of one or more nerves and the tissues around them in one arm or leg.The images are recorded as a short video and saved as a permanent record.

This CPT code encompasses a comprehensive ultrasound examination of one or more nerves and their associated structures along their entire anatomical course within a single extremity. The procedure necessitates real-time cine (movie) imaging and the creation of permanently documented images. This detailed assessment allows for thorough evaluation of nerve structures, identifying potential pathologies such as neuropathies or nerve entrapments.

Example 1: A patient presents with symptoms suggestive of carpal tunnel syndrome.A comprehensive ultrasound of the median nerve in the wrist and forearm is performed using 76883 to assess for nerve compression and associated changes in the surrounding tissues., A patient with a history of trauma to the lower extremity experiences persistent pain and numbness.A comprehensive ultrasound of the sciatic nerve is performed (76883) to evaluate for nerve damage or entrapment., A patient presents with symptoms of ulnar nerve neuropathy in the elbow. Code 76883 would be used to image the ulnar nerve throughout its course in the arm from the shoulder to the wrist. This would allow for the assessment of nerve compression, inflammation, or other abnormalities.

* Detailed clinical history indicating the need for the study.* Images showing the entire course of the nerve(s) in the extremity.* Cine loops of the nerve(s) demonstrating dynamic movement.* A comprehensive report describing the findings and interpretation.* Measurements (when clinically indicated).
