(Active) Effective Date: N/A Revision Date: N/A Radiology - Nuclear Medicine Feed
Brain imaging, less than 4 static views.
Modifiers 26 (professional component) and TC (technical component) may be applicable.Other modifiers may be applicable depending upon the circumstances.
Medical necessity must be established for each case. This includes clinical indications supporting the need for the imaging, such as suspected brain death or altered mental status.
The provider administers a radiopharmaceutical, monitors the imaging process, and interprets the results to assess brain function.
In simple words: A special type of brain scan that uses a tiny amount of radioactive material to take a few pictures of the brain to see how it's working. This is sometimes used to confirm brain death.
Nuclear diagnostic imaging of the brain using a radiopharmaceutical substance to examine brain function, capturing less than four static (two-dimensional) views.
Example 1: Confirmation of brain death:A patient on life support shows no clinical signs of brain activity. A brain scan with a radiopharmaceutical is performed, and less than four static views are taken to confirm the absence of brain function., Evaluation of brain function in a comatose patient:A patient in a coma undergoes a brain scan using less than four static views. The images reveal reduced uptake of the radiopharmaceutical, suggesting impaired brain function., Limited brain imaging due to patient instability:A critically ill patient requires evaluation of brain function, but can only tolerate a limited scan. Less than four static views are acquired to minimize patient discomfort and risk.
Documentation should include the medical necessity for the procedure, the radiopharmaceutical used, the number of views obtained, and the interpretation of the findings.
** The supply of the radiopharmaceutical is reported separately. This code does not include vascular flow imaging.
