2025 CPT code 80047
(Active) Effective Date: N/A Revision Date: N/A Pathology and Laboratory - Organ or Disease Oriented Panels Feed
Basic metabolic panel (Calcium, ionized). This panel must include the following: Calcium, ionized (82330); Carbon dioxide (bicarbonate) (82374); Chloride (82435); Creatinine (82565); Glucose (82947); Potassium (84132); Sodium (84295); and Urea nitrogen (BUN) (84520).
Modifiers may be applicable to 80047. Modifier 91 is used to indicate a repeat laboratory test.
Medical necessity must be established for the 80047.It is typically justified when there is a clinical need to assess kidney function, electrolyte balance, acid-base status, glucose control, and calcium levels. The specific medical condition or symptoms being investigated should be documented.
The lab analyst performs the test to measure the blood level of the eight chemicals. They may also collect the blood sample by inserting a needle into a vein.
In simple words: This blood test measures eight different substances in your blood: ionized calcium (the active form of calcium), sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide, glucose (sugar), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine. It helps doctors check how your kidneys, electrolytes, acid-base balance, blood sugar, and calcium levels are doing. It's often done during routine checkups or in the emergency room.
Basic metabolic panel (Calcium, ionized) test measures the blood level of eight chemicals including ionized calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide, glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine. The test includes ionized calcium, which is the active, or free form of calcium in the blood that is not attached to proteins. A typical specimen is serum, or blood. The code requires performance of all eight components to report.
Example 1: A patient presents to the emergency department with dehydration and altered mental status. The 80047 is ordered to assess electrolyte balance and kidney function., A patient with chronic kidney disease has routine blood work, including the 80047, to monitor kidney function and electrolyte levels., A patient with diabetes has the 80047 ordered during a routine check-up to assess glucose control and overall metabolic health.
Documentation should include the reason for the test, the date and time of collection, the specimen type (e.g., serum), and the results of all eight components.
