2025 CPT code 82930

Gastric acid analysis, includes pH if performed, each specimen.

Report 82930 once for each specimen tested. For example, if four separate specimens are tested for gastric analysis, report each as one unit of 82930, for a total of 4 units. For insertion of the gastric tube, use code 43754 (diagnostic gastric intubation and aspiration), and for fractional specimen collection, use code 43755.

Modifiers may be applicable in specific situations, such as if the test is performed on a patient who is critically ill (modifier 22 - Increased Procedural Services) or if only a limited analysis is performed due to specimen inadequacy (modifier 52 - Reduced Services).

Medical necessity for gastric acid analysis is based on the patient's symptoms and the clinical suspicion of conditions affecting gastric acid production, such as ulcers, gastritis, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

The lab analyst performs the technical steps for gastric acid analysis, including measuring the volume of each specimen, measuring the gastric acidity as shown by pH, or both. The methodology is primarily by using a pH meter, which accurately measures the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid, such as gastric fluid.

In simple words: This test measures the amount of acid in your stomach. It's done by testing a sample of your stomach fluid, sometimes using a pH meter. Each sample tested is reported separately. Sometimes, a stimulation test is also done. This involves giving you a medicine to stimulate acid production and then taking several samples over 1 to 1.5 hours.

The lab analyst measures the gastric specimen for total acid by chemical testing, by use of a pH meter, or both. This testing is performed on each specimen, and each specimen represents one unit. The patient may also have gastric analysis testing after a stimulation test; in that case the provider obtains fractional specimens over a 1 to 1.5 hour period for testing.

Example 1: A patient presents with obscure stomach pain and weight loss. The physician orders a gastric acid analysis to assess the level of acid production in the stomach., A patient with suspected stomach ulcer undergoes a gastric acid stimulation test to measure acid production after stimulation with a secretagogue., A patient experiencing loss of appetite and stomach discomfort has a gastric acid analysis performed on four separate specimens to monitor acid levels over time.

Documentation should include the reason for the test, the number of specimens tested, and the method used for analysis (pH meter or chemical testing). For stimulation tests, the type of stimulant used and the time intervals of specimen collection should also be documented.
