2025 CPT code 83519

Immunoassay for analyte other than infectious agent antibody or infectious agent antigen; quantitative, by radioimmunoassay (eg, RIA).

If an analyte is measured in multiple specimens from different sources or at different times, report the analyte separately for each source and specimen. If the analyte result is derived using a calculation that includes other ordered tests, report all the requested analyte codes.

Modifiers may be applicable, such as 59 (Distinct Procedural Service), 90 (Reference (Outside) Laboratory), and 91 (Repeat Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory Test).

Medical necessity must be established for each specific use case. The documentation should clearly demonstrate why the test was ordered and how the results will impact the patient's care. For example, if used for diagnosing a rare endocrine disorder, the documentation should support the suspicion of the disorder and the need for the specific analyte measurement for confirmation or further evaluation.

Performed by a laboratory analyst or technician. The process involves preparing the specimen, running the RIA procedure, and interpreting the results.

IMPORTANT:Consider 83516 for qualitative or semiquantitative immunoassays using a multiple-step method and 83520 for other immunoassays not otherwise specified.

In simple words: This test measures the amount of a specific substance in a sample of your bodily fluid, like blood or urine. It uses a very sensitive technique called radioimmunoassay, which involves a small amount of radioactivity, to get a precise measurement.

This code represents a quantitative immunoassay performed by radioimmunoassay (RIA) to measure an analyte that is neither an infectious agent antibody nor an infectious agent antigen.RIA uses radioactive isotopes to precisely measure the concentration of the analyte in a specimen.

Example 1: A patient presents with symptoms suggesting a rare endocrine disorder.83519 is used to measure the level of a specific hormone to aid in diagnosis., Monitoring drug levels in a patient undergoing treatment for a chronic condition where precise dosage adjustments are required., A patient with suspected autoimmune disease requires a test to measure the level of specific autoantibodies. If these autoantibodies are noninfectious and measured using RIA, 83519 might be used.

The physician's order for the test, the specific analyte being measured, the specimen source, the date and time of collection, and the result of the assay. Medical necessity for the test should also be documented in the patient's medical record.
