2025 CPT code 87502

Detects multiple influenza virus types/subtypes (up to two) via nucleic acid detection using multiplex amplified probe technique and possibly multiplex reverse transcription.

Adhere to current CPT guidelines for microbiology procedures, including the use of modifiers where appropriate (59 for distinct procedures, 91 for repeat tests on the same day).

Modifiers 59 and 91 may be applicable depending on the circumstances of service.

Medical necessity is established by the presence of influenza-like illness and/or clinical suspicion of influenza, warranting diagnostic testing to guide treatment decisions.

The clinical responsibility lies with the laboratory analyst who performs the technical steps involved in the influenza virus detection.

IMPORTANT:Use 87501 for single influenza virus type/subtype detection. Use 87503 for each additional type/subtype beyond the first two.87400 may be used for influenza A or B antigen detection by immunoassay; this code should be reported twice if both A and B are tested.Modifiers 59 and 91 may apply in specific situations (distinct procedural service, repeat testing on the same day).

In simple words: This lab test identifies up to two types of influenza virus in a sample. It uses advanced techniques to detect the virus's genetic material.

This CPT code encompasses the laboratory procedure for detecting multiple (up to two) influenza virus types or subtypes. The methodology involves nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) detection utilizing a multiplex amplified probe technique, potentially including multiplex reverse transcription. The lab analyst performs the technical aspects, including amplification (e.g., PCR), evaluation of amplified products, and quantification of microorganisms.

Example 1: A patient presents with influenza-like symptoms. The physician orders a multiplex PCR test to detect influenza A and B viruses.Code 87502 is reported., A patient with a weakened immune system exhibits respiratory symptoms. The physician orders a rapid molecular test that detects influenza A (H1N1) and influenza B. Code 87502 is used., A child shows symptoms of influenza. Testing reveals influenza A (H3N2) and influenza B.Code 87502 is reported, along with 87503 for the additional subtype if payer allows.

Complete patient demographics, specimen collection date and time, test result(s), method of testing (multiplex PCR, etc.), and any relevant clinical information.

** The code 87502 is for multiplex testing of up to two influenza virus types or subtypes. For more than two types/subtypes, use 87503 in addition to 87502. Reimbursement varies by payer and may be subject to payer-specific policies and local coverage determinations (LCDs).
