2025 CPT code 87802

Detection of Streptococcus group B antigen by immunoassay with direct optical (visual) observation.

Modifier 59 may be used for multiple specimens/sites. Modifier 91 is used for repeat tests on the same day. Molecular diagnostic codes should not be reported in conjunction with this code.

Modifiers 59 and 91 are applicable.

Medically necessary for diagnosing or ruling out GBS infection in symptomatic patients, pregnant women, and newborns, to guide appropriate treatment and preventive measures.

Laboratory personnel collect and analyze the specimen using immunoassay techniques. Results are observed directly, and positive findings indicate the presence of Group B Streptococcus.

In simple words: This lab test checks for strep B bacteria using a quick test that shows a visual result, such as a color change, right away.

This test involves an immunoassay to detect the presence of Streptococcus group B antigen. Results are interpreted through direct visual observation of a color change, line, or other indicator in the test device.

Example 1: A pregnant woman is screened for Group B Streptococcus (GBS) at 35-37 weeks of gestation to prevent transmission to the newborn during delivery., A newborn infant exhibiting signs of infection is tested for GBS to confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment., An elderly patient with pneumonia undergoes GBS testing to identify the causative organism and tailor antibiotic therapy.

Specimen source, collection date and time, and ordering physician information. Any specific symptoms or conditions prompting the test should also be documented.

** This test is distinct from molecular diagnostic tests and should not be reported with them. CPT codes 87811 and other similar antigen tests should be considered for different pathogens or testing methods. Direct observation distinguishes 87802 from tests requiring more complex analysis.
