Modifiers may be applicable, such as modifier 59 when performed with 92611 on the same day.

Medical necessity for this code must be supported by documentation of a swallowing disorder or difficulty, impacting the patient's ability to eat, drink, or manage secretions safely and effectively.

The SLP is responsible for conducting the evaluation, which includes assessing the patient's oral and pharyngeal swallowing function, as well as related oral motor and laryngeal functions.

In simple words: This procedure checks how well you can chew, swallow food and liquids. The doctor will look at how your tongue and mouth move and how your throat works when you swallow.

This code represents the evaluation of a patient's oral and pharyngeal swallowing function, typically performed by a speech-language pathologist (SLP).The evaluation assesses the patient's ability to chew, form a bolus, and swallow various food and liquid consistencies. It also includes an assessment of oral motor skills, laryngeal function, and reflexes.

Example 1: A patient with a history of stroke presents with difficulty swallowing. The SLP performs an evaluation of oral and pharyngeal swallowing function to determine the extent of the dysphagia and recommend appropriate interventions., A child with suspected swallowing difficulties undergoes an evaluation to assess their ability to safely and effectively swallow different food textures and liquids., A patient with head and neck cancer undergoes an evaluation to determine the impact of the cancer and/or treatment on their swallowing function.

Documentation should include details of the patient's medical history, presenting symptoms, the findings of the oral and pharyngeal swallowing evaluation, and recommendations for treatment or further investigation.
