Complete transthoracic echocardiogram with spectral and color flow Doppler.
Modifiers such as 26 (Professional Component), 51 (Multiple Procedures), TC (Technical Component) might be applicable depending on the circumstances of the performed service.
Medical necessity must be established for this procedure. The documentation should support the reason for the study, such as signs, symptoms, or prior findings that warrant the evaluation of heart function and blood flow.
The physician applies gel and places a transducer on the patient's chest to obtain images of the heart from various angles. Measurements are taken and Doppler techniques are used to assess blood flow.
In simple words: This is a detailed ultrasound of your heart that uses sound waves to create moving pictures and measure blood flow.It allows the doctor to see the structure of your heart and how well it's working.
This comprehensive procedure includes spectral Doppler and color flow Doppler in addition to 2-dimensional and selected M-mode examinations, when performed, of the heart and great vessels. It provides information regarding intracardiac blood flow and hemodynamics.
Example 1: A patient with a heart murmur is referred for an echocardiogram to evaluate valve function and blood flow., A patient experiencing shortness of breath undergoes an echocardiogram to assess heart function and identify any abnormalities., A patient with a history of heart attack has an echocardiogram to evaluate the extent of damage and monitor heart function.
Documentation should include the reason for the echocardiogram, the findings of the examination (including measurements and Doppler findings), and the interpretation of the results. Images and/or digital data should be archived.
- Modifier TC rule: Modifier TC can be used when only the technical component of the procedure is being billed.
- Specialties:Cardiology
- Place of Service:Office, Outpatient Hospital, Inpatient Hospital, or other facilities where echocardiograms are performed.
