2025 CPT code 93312

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) with image documentation (2D), including probe placement, image acquisition, interpretation, and report.

Do not report 93312 in conjunction with 93355. Modifier 26 should be used if only the professional component is being reported.

Modifiers 26 (Professional Component) and TC (Technical Component) may be applicable.

Medical necessity for a TEE must be established by documenting the clinical rationale for the procedure. This could include symptoms, prior diagnostic test results, or other relevant clinical information.

The physician is responsible for preparing the patient, performing the TEE procedure, interpreting the images, and generating a final report.

IMPORTANT:Do not report 93312 in conjunction with 93355 (TEE for guidance of a transcatheter intracardiac or great vessel(s) structural intervention(s)). For TEE during advanced transcatheter structural heart procedures see 93355. For insertion of the probe by another physician see 93313.

In simple words: This procedure uses a small ultrasound probe passed down the throat to take detailed pictures of your heart. The doctor will then interpret these images to assess your heart’s health and function.

This code represents a transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) procedure, which uses a specialized probe inserted into the esophagus to obtain detailed images of the heart. It includes probe placement, image acquisition, interpretation, and a final report. While M-mode recording may be included, it is not required for this code.

Example 1: A patient presents with a suspected heart valve problem. A TEE is performed to evaluate the valve structure and function., A patient with a history of atrial fibrillation undergoes a TEE to assess for the presence of blood clots in the left atrial appendage. , A patient with congenital heart disease undergoes a TEE to evaluate cardiac anatomy and hemodynamics.

Documentation should include the indication for the TEE, the images obtained, measurements taken, interpretation of the findings, and a final report.
