2025 CPT code 93573

Injection procedure during cardiac catheterization, including imaging supervision, interpretation, and report; for selective pulmonary arterial angiography, bilateral.

This code is an add-on code and should not be reported alone. It must be reported in conjunction with a primary procedure code for cardiac catheterization. Do not report this code with nonselective pulmonary angiography (93568) or unilateral selective pulmonary angiography (93569).

Modifiers may be applicable. Modifier 52 may be used for reduced services, and modifier 53 may be used if the procedure is discontinued. Other modifiers, like those related to assistant surgeons or specific circumstances may also apply.

Medical necessity must be established for the underlying cardiac catheterization procedure and for the performance of bilateral selective pulmonary angiography. Documentation should support the need for this specific imaging study to evaluate the pulmonary arteries based on the patient's clinical condition and other diagnostic findings.

The physician performing this procedure is responsible for prepping and anesthetizing the patient, introducing the catheter into the pulmonary artery, navigating it into both the right and left pulmonary artery systems, injecting the contrast dye, supervising the imaging process, interpreting the resulting images, and creating a report summarizing the findings.

IMPORTANT:Use 93569 for unilateral selective pulmonary arterial angiography. Use 93568 for nonselective pulmonary arterial angiography. For selective pulmonary venous angiography, use 93574. For selective pulmonary angiography of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCAs), use 93575.

In simple words: During a cardiac catheterization procedure, the doctor inserts a thin tube (catheter) into blood vessels in your groin or arm and guides it to your heart. Then, dye is injected into the arteries leading to your lungs, and special x-rays are taken to create pictures of these arteries and see how the blood flows through them. The doctor reviews these pictures and prepares a report.

This code describes a procedure performed during cardiac catheterization where contrast material is injected into the right and left pulmonary arteries to visualize them and assess blood flow. The procedure includes imaging supervision, interpretation, and a report of the findings. It is used for selective, bilateral pulmonary arterial angiography.

Example 1: A patient with suspected pulmonary hypertension undergoes right and left heart catheterization, including selective bilateral pulmonary angiography (93573) to evaluate the pressure and blood flow within the pulmonary arteries., A patient with a history of pulmonary embolism undergoes cardiac catheterization, including bilateral selective pulmonary angiography (93573) to assess for residual clots or blockages in the pulmonary arteries., During a cardiac catheterization for a patient with congenital heart disease, selective bilateral pulmonary angiography (93573) is performed to evaluate the anatomy and blood flow of the pulmonary arteries and look for any abnormalities.

Documentation should include details of the cardiac catheterization procedure, the reason for performing selective bilateral pulmonary angiography, the injection site used, the type and amount of contrast material used, the images obtained, the interpretation of the images, and any complications encountered.

** This code represents a bilateral procedure and includes imaging of both the right and left pulmonary arteries. It is important to differentiate this code from unilateral selective pulmonary angiography (93569) and other pulmonary angiography procedures.
