2025 CPT code 95715

Electroencephalogram with video (VEEG), review of data, technical description by EEG technologist, each increment of 12-26 hours; with intermittent monitoring and maintenance.

Refer to CPT guidelines for proper coding of long-term EEG services, including the definitions of intermittent and continuous monitoring and the limitations on the number of patients an EEG technologist can monitor concurrently.

Modifier 52 may be used if the service is reduced (less than 12 hours but more than 2 hours). Modifier TC is not appropriate for this code.

Medical necessity for long-term VEEG is established when a shorter routine EEG is insufficient to diagnose or manage a patient's condition. This often includes situations where seizures are infrequent, or when correlation of brain activity with observed behaviors is necessary, as with sleep disorders or certain types of epilepsy.

The EEG technologist is responsible for setting up and maintaining the EEG and video equipment, applying electrodes using the 10-20 system, educating the patient/caregiver, intermittently monitoring the recording, reviewing the data, and creating a technical description of the findings.

In simple words: This procedure involves recording brain activity and video for 12-26 hours to help diagnose conditions like seizures. A technician places sensors on the head and monitors the recording. The recording is then reviewed and summarized by the technician. This helps the doctor understand what's happening in the brain.

This code represents the technical component of a long-term video EEG (VEEG) performed by an EEG technologist. It involves capturing both EEG and video data concurrently for a period of 12 to 26 hours. The technologist is responsible for the setup, intermittent monitoring (at least every 2 hours), maintenance of the equipment, review of the recorded data, and preparation of a technical description of the findings. This code is used for each 12-26 hour increment of the recording.

Example 1: A patient with suspected epilepsy undergoes a 24-hour VEEG to capture seizure activity. The technologist performs the setup, monitors the recording, and reviews the data for abnormalities., A patient in the ICU requires continuous EEG monitoring for seizure detection. The recording is extended beyond the initial 24 hours, with 95715 being used for the additional 12-26 hour increment., A patient with a sleep disorder undergoes a long-term VEEG to monitor brain activity during sleep. The video component helps correlate brainwave patterns with observed behaviors.

Documentation should include the duration of the recording, the type of monitoring performed (intermittent), confirmation that video was recorded concurrently with EEG for at least 80% of the recording time, the technical description of the EEG findings, and any maintenance performed during the recording.

** Ensure the video portion of the study meets the minimum requirement of 80% concurrent recording time with the EEG. If not, the study should be coded as an EEG without video.
