2025 CPT code 95822

Electroencephalogram (EEG); recording in coma or sleep only.

Hyperventilation and/or photic stimulation may be included when appropriate.

Modifiers 26 (Professional Component) and TC (Technical Component) may be applied if appropriate.

Medical necessity for this code is established by the diagnosis being evaluated, such as coma, epilepsy, sleep disorders, or other neurological conditions impacting brain function. The documentation should clearly link the EEG to the patient's condition and treatment plan.

The physician or other qualified healthcare professional performs the EEG, analyzes the recording, and prepares a report. For patients in a coma, the EEG is used to assess brain activity, identify potential signs of recovery, and help determine the prognosis. For patients in sleep, the EEG is used in diagnosing sleep disorders.

IMPORTANT:Do not report 95822 in conjunction with 95700-95726.

In simple words: This is a brain wave test done while someone is asleep or in a coma. It helps doctors check brain activity and diagnose certain conditions.

This code represents an electroencephalogram (EEG) performed on a patient in a coma or sleep state only. The recording time for this procedure is between 20 and 40 minutes. It is important to note that this code should not be reported in conjunction with codes 95700-95726.

Example 1: A 25-year-old patient is admitted to the hospital in a coma following a car accident. An EEG (95822) is performed to evaluate brain activity and determine the prognosis., A 60-year-old patient with suspected Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease undergoes an EEG while asleep (95822) to assess characteristic brain wave patterns., A 10-year-old patient with excessive daytime sleepiness undergoes an EEG while asleep (95822) to rule out narcolepsy or other sleep disorders.

Documentation should include the reason for the EEG, the patient's state (coma or sleep), the duration of the recording, and the interpretation of the findings.
