2025 CPT code 95922

Testing of autonomic nervous system function; vasomotor adrenergic innervation (sympathetic adrenergic function), including beat-to-beat blood pressure and R-R interval changes during Valsalva maneuver and at least five minutes of passive tilt.

For interpretation only, use modifier 26. If only the Valsalva maneuver or the tilt table test is performed, and not both, use modifier 52 to indicate reduced services. This code requires continuous beat-to-beat blood pressure and heart rate recording from an ECG, a minimum 20-minute supine rest period before testing, at least two Valsalva maneuvers, and a minimum five-minute passive head-up tilt table test followed by return to the supine position. The heart rate must be derived from an ECG to ensure accurate R-R interval measurement.

Modifiers 26, 52, TC, and others may be applicable.

Medical necessity must be established by documenting the patient's symptoms, signs, and/or prior test results that justify the need for autonomic function testing.

The physician or other qualified healthcare professional is responsible for the performance, interpretation, and reporting of the autonomic function test.

In simple words: This test checks how well your body automatically controls things like blood pressure and heart rate when you change positions or exhale forcefully. It helps doctors find problems with the nervous system that controls these automatic functions.

This code represents a test of the sympathetic adrenergic function of the autonomic nervous system. It includes beat-to-beat blood pressure monitoring and R-R interval changes during a Valsalva maneuver and at least five minutes of passive head-up tilt table testing. The test helps evaluate the body's involuntary responses to changes in position and pressure, aiding in the diagnosis of autonomic nervous system disorders.

Example 1: A patient with suspected orthostatic hypotension undergoes testing using 95922 to assess the changes in blood pressure and heart rate upon changing positions., A patient with diabetes experiences symptoms suggestive of autonomic neuropathy. Code 95922 is used to evaluate the adrenergic function and aid in diagnosis., A patient with a history of syncope undergoes testing with 95922 to evaluate the body's cardiovascular response to position changes and pressure.

Documentation should include a detailed description of the test performed, including the duration of the tilt, the number of Valsalva maneuvers, the recorded blood pressure and heart rate data, the interpretation of the findings, and the diagnosis.Any symptoms related to autonomic dysfunction should also be documented.
