2025 CPT code 97014

Application of a modality to one or more areas; electrical stimulation (unattended).

Modifier 51 should not be appended to this code. Each distinct procedure should be reported separately. For electrical stimulation requiring constant attendance, use 97032.

Modifiers may be applicable. Check current guidelines for appropriate modifier usage for specific circumstances.

Medical necessity must be established for the use of electrical stimulation. The documentation should support the use of this modality to address a specific medical condition and demonstrate its therapeutic benefit to the patient.

The provider (physician or therapist) is responsible for evaluating the patient, determining the appropriate areas for treatment, applying the electrodes, and setting the parameters of the electrical stimulation. They also supervise the treatment, even if they are not present during the entire session.

IMPORTANT:For acupuncture with electrical stimulation, see 97813, 97814. For peripheral nerve transcutaneous magnetic stimulation, see 0766T, 0767T.Medicare providers should use G0283 instead of 97014.

In simple words: Electrical stimulation is applied to the affected area(s) using electrodes placed on the skin. The patient receives this treatment without the provider needing to be present. It can help with pain relief and improve muscle function.

This code describes the application of unattended electrical stimulation (EMS) to one or more areas for therapeutic purposes. The patient receives the treatment without the constant presence of the provider. It's often used for pain management, reducing inflammation, and improving muscle function.

Example 1: A patient with chronic low back pain receives unattended electrical stimulation to reduce pain and inflammation., A patient recovering from a stroke uses unattended electrical stimulation to improve muscle strength and function in a weakened limb., Following a knee injury, a patient utilizes unattended electrical stimulation to reduce swelling and pain.

Documentation should include the diagnosis, the area(s) treated, the type of electrical stimulation used, the treatment parameters (e.g., frequency, intensity, duration), and the patient's response to treatment.Medical necessity for the treatment should also be documented.

** This code does not cover the application and fitting of a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS) unit by a physician, which is reported using code 64550.Training on the use of a TENS unit is not billable by physicians as a physical therapy treatment under 97014.
