2025 CPT code 97602

Non-selective debridement of wound(s), without anesthesia, including topical application(s), wound assessment, and instruction(s) for ongoing care, per session.

Requires direct (one-on-one) patient contact. Not for use with selective debridement (97597, 97598) on the same wound. Do not report with chemical cauterization (17250) for the same lesion.

Modifier 51 is not used with this code.

Medical necessity must be established for debridement. This could include impaired wound healing due to the presence of necrotic or devitalized tissue. The documentation should clearly support the need for non-selective debridement rather than other forms of wound care.

In simple words: The healthcare provider removes dead tissue from your wound to help it heal. This includes cleaning the wound, applying medication, and teaching you how to care for it at home. This procedure doesn't use anesthesia and is billed for each session.

This code describes the removal of devitalized tissue from a wound without distinguishing between viable and nonviable tissues. It includes topical applications, wound assessment, and instructions for ongoing care, and is reported per session. Methods may include wet-to-moist dressings, enzymatic debridement, abrasion, or larval therapy.

Example 1: A patient with a chronic diabetic ulcer on their foot undergoes non-selective debridement using enzymatic debridement, followed by topical application of a wound dressing and instructions for home care., A patient with a pressure ulcer undergoes non-selective debridement using wet-to-moist dressings, wound assessment, and instruction on ongoing care., A patient presents with a large, infected wound. The provider performs non-selective debridement using larval therapy to remove the dead tissue. The wound is assessed, a topical antimicrobial is applied, and the patient receives instructions for ongoing care.

Documentation should include the type of debridement technique utilized (e.g., wet-to-moist, enzymatic, abrasion, larval therapy), a thorough wound assessment (including drainage, color, texture, temperature, vascularity, condition of surrounding tissue, and size), and details of topical applications and instructions for ongoing care.
