2025 ICD-10-CM code E64.0

Sequelae of protein-calorie malnutrition. This refers to the late effects of protein-calorie malnutrition, even if the malnutrition itself is no longer present.

Code first the condition resulting from the protein-calorie malnutrition. This code should not be used if the protein-calorie malnutrition is still present. Use codes E43, E44, E46 instead.

Medical necessity for treatment of the sequelae of protein-calorie malnutrition must be established. The documentation must demonstrate a causal link between the previous malnutrition and the current condition.

Diagnosis is based on patient history, signs, symptoms, and physical examination. Treatment depends on the specific sequelae, their severity, and the patient's age.

In simple words: This code describes the long-term health problems that can happen after someone has suffered from a severe lack of protein and calories in their diet, even if they are now eating enough.

Sequelae of protein-calorie malnutrition refers to complications or late effects, often chronic, that occurred as a result of protein-calorie malnutrition. Sequelae include but are not limited to mental and cognitive disorders; muscle wasting; and heart, liver, and kidney failure.

Example 1: A patient presents with cognitive impairment and muscle wasting years after experiencing severe famine in childhood., A patient with a history of anorexia nervosa now exhibits signs of heart failure, potentially linked to long-term nutritional deficiency., A patient who had undergone bariatric surgery experiences long-term liver and kidney complications due to insufficient protein intake post surgery.

Documentation should include a detailed history of the protein-calorie malnutrition, including duration and severity.Any present sequelae should be thoroughly documented with supporting clinical findings, such as imaging studies, laboratory results, and specialist evaluations.

** Excludes1: transitory endocrine and metabolic disorders specific to newborn (P70-P74)Excludes2: retarded development following protein-calorie malnutrition (E45)
