2025 HCPCS code G0282

Electrical stimulation (unattended) to one or more areas, for wound care other than described in G0281.

Use this code for wound care other than that described by G0281. Do not use this code with CPT code 97014 (electrical stimulation unattended), which is not recognized by Medicare.Ensure documentation supports the medical necessity and duration of the treatment.

Medical necessity for this code must demonstrate that the wound is not healing with conventional methods and that electrical stimulation is a reasonable and necessary intervention. Specific payer guidelines and medical policy criteria should be consulted.

The provider applies wet electrode pads to administer the electrical stimulation to the targeted areas around the wound. They monitor the patient's response to the treatment and adjust the therapy plan of care as needed.

IMPORTANT:For chronic stage III and stage IV pressure ulcers, arterial ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and venous stasis ulcers not demonstrating measurable signs of healing after 30 days of conventional care, use G0281. For unattended electrical stimulation for indications other than wound care, use G0283. For electromagnetic therapy, consider G0329 or G0295.

In simple words: This code describes a treatment where a mild electric current is applied to wounds that are not healing well, to help them heal faster. It's used for wounds that are not pressure sores, ulcers caused by poor blood flow, or diabetic ulcers.

This code covers the application of electrical current to one or more areas of the body to treat wounds (excluding chronic stage III and stage IV pressure ulcers, arterial ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and venous stasis ulcers) that show no sign of improvement with other methods, even after 30 days.It involves the use of a wet electrode pad to administer an electric current to one or more body areas near the wound. This stimulates muscles and improves blood supply to the area, aiding the healing process.

Example 1: A patient with a surgical wound that is not healing properly after 30 days, despite conventional wound care, receives electrical stimulation therapy using G0282., A patient with a traumatic wound, not classified as a pressure ulcer, arterial ulcer, diabetic ulcer, or venous stasis ulcer, undergoes electrical stimulation to promote healing., A burn patient with a wound not responding to standard care receives electrical stimulation therapy.

Documentation should support the medical necessity for electrical stimulation, including details of the wound, previous treatments, and lack of response to conventional care for at least 30 days. The type, frequency, and duration of electrical stimulation should be documented, along with patient response and any adverse reactions.

** Coverage for G0282 varies among payers. It is not covered by Medicare.Always verify coverage with the specific payer prior to providing the service.Detailed documentation supporting the medical necessity is crucial for successful reimbursement.
