2025 ICD-10-CM code I96

Gangrene, not elsewhere classified.

Code I96 should not be used if a more specific code for the gangrene exists. Refer to the ICD-10-CM guidelines and index for proper code selection.

Medical necessity for the treatment of gangrene is established by the presence of necrotic tissue. The medical record should document the signs, symptoms, and clinical findings supporting the diagnosis.

Clinicians responsible for diagnosing and treating gangrene, such as surgeons, infectious disease specialists, and primary care physicians, may use this code. Documentation should clearly indicate the presence of gangrene and the absence of specific causes classified elsewhere.

IMPORTANT:If the gangrene is due to diabetes, codes E08-E13 with .52 should be used. If due to gas gangrene, A48.0 should be used. For other specific types of gangrene, refer to the Alphabetical Index.

In simple words: This code is used when a patient has gangrene, which is the death of body tissue due to lack of blood flow, but the specific cause or location isn't described by a more precise code.

This code encompasses gangrene that is not specifically classified elsewhere in the ICD-10-CM. This includes gangrenous cellulitis. Conditions excluded from this code are: gangrene in atherosclerosis of native arteries of the extremities (I70.26), gangrene in hernia (K40.1, K40.4, K41.1, K41.4, K42.1, K43.1-, K44.1, K45.1, K46.1), gangrene in other peripheral vascular diseases (I73.-), gangrene of certain specified sites (refer to the Alphabetical Index), gas gangrene (A48.0), and pyoderma gangrenosum (L88). It also excludes gangrene in diabetes mellitus (E08-E13 with .52).

Example 1: A patient presents with gangrene in their toe, but the underlying cause is not yet determined. I96 would be used until a definitive diagnosis is made., A patient with a history of trauma develops gangrene in the injured area.If no other specific cause is identified, I96 would be appropriate. , A patient develops gangrene following a surgical procedure, and the specific type of gangrene isn't specified. In this scenario, I96 would be used.

Documentation should clearly state the diagnosis of gangrene. If known, the cause, location, and extent of the gangrene should be documented. Any associated conditions, such as infection or diabetes, should also be noted.
