Acute nasopharyngitis, commonly known as the common cold.

Code J00 should not be used if the patient has acute pharyngitis (J02.-), acute sore throat NOS (J02.9), influenza with other respiratory manifestations (J09.X2, J10.1, J11.1), pharyngitis NOS (J02.9), rhinitis NOS (J31.0), or sore throat NOS (J02.9).

The medical necessity for this code is established by the presence of signs and symptoms consistent with acute nasopharyngitis. Treatment is typically supportive.

Diagnosis and symptomatic treatment of the common cold.

In simple words: The common cold, a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract.

Acute nasopharyngitis [common cold]. This includes acute rhinitis, coryza (acute), infective nasopharyngitis NOS, infective rhinitis, and nasal catarrh (acute).It also includes nasopharyngitis NOS.

Example 1: A patient presents with a runny nose, sneezing, and a sore throat.They have no fever or other symptoms. The diagnosis is J00., A child has a cough, nasal congestion, and a low-grade fever.The physician diagnoses acute nasopharyngitis (J00)., An adult experiences a head cold with symptoms including a stuffy nose and post-nasal drip. They are diagnosed with J00.

Documentation should include the signs and symptoms supporting the diagnosis of the common cold, such as runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, and nasal congestion.Fever may or may not be present.
