2025 ICD-10-CM code K09.0

Developmental odontogenic cysts. This includes dentigerous cyst, eruption cyst, follicular cyst, gingival cyst, lateral periodontal cyst, and primordial cyst.

Do not use this code for keratocysts (D16.4, D16.5) or odontogenic keratocystic tumors (D16.4, D16.5).

Medical necessity for treatment is based on the presence of symptoms, potential for complications (infection, pathological fracture), and interference with normal function.

In simple words: This code refers to a type of cyst that originates during tooth development.

Developmental odontogenic cysts. Includes: lesions showing histological features both of aneurysmal cyst and of another fibro-osseous lesion. Excludes2: cysts of jaw (M27.0-, M27.4-) radicular cyst (K04.8)

Example 1: A patient presents with a swelling in the jaw. Imaging reveals a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted molar., A child is found to have an eruption cyst overlying a partially erupted primary tooth., A biopsy of a lesion in the jaw reveals a primordial cyst.

Documentation should include the type of cyst, location, size, and any associated symptoms. Imaging reports, biopsy results, and clinical findings should be documented.
