2025 ICD-10-CM code M81.0
Age-related osteoporosis without current pathological fracture.
Diagnosis of osteoporosis requires evidence of low bone mineral density based on DEXA scan results.
Providers diagnose the condition on the basis of the patient’s history, physical examination, imaging techniques such as X-rays or dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA scan) to determine bone mineral density, and laboratory examination of the blood and urine. Treatment options include lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, intake of calcium and vitamin D supplements, and medications such as bisphosphonates and hormone therapy to help maintain and increase bone density.
- Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99)
- Osteopathies and chondropathies (M80-M94)
In simple words: Thinning of the bones due to aging, without any current broken bones.
Age-related osteoporosis without a current pathological fracture refers to a patient who develops osteoporosis, or thinning of the bones, due to changes related to aging without an associated pathological fracture. This condition may result in a gradual loss of height and a stooped posture.
Example 1: A 70-year-old female presents with gradual loss of height and increasing kyphosis. DEXA scan reveals low bone density, consistent with osteoporosis. There is no evidence of any fractures. Code: M81.0., A 65-year-old male with a history of smoking and long-term corticosteroid use is found to have decreased bone density on a routine checkup. No fractures are present. Code: M81.0., An 80-year-old female presents complaining of back pain. Imaging studies reveal generalized osteopenia and compression fractures of the vertebrae. Code: M80.- (Other osteoporosis with current pathological fracture.)
Type of osteoporosis, location, laterality, presence or absence of fracture, and episode of care.
** Excludes1: osteoporosis with current pathological fracture (M80.-) and Sudeck's atrophy (M89.0). Excludes2: certain conditions originating in the perinatal period (P04-P96), certain infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99), compartment syndrome (traumatic) (T79.A-), complications of pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (O00-O9A), congenital malformations, deformations, and chromosomal abnormalities (Q00-Q99), endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-E88), injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes (S00-T88), neoplasms (C00-D49), symptoms, signs and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified (R00-R94).
