2025 ICD-10-CM code O73

Retained placenta and membranes, without hemorrhage.

This code should not be used if there is significant postpartum hemorrhage (O72.-).Excludes1 notes indicate that the excluded code should never be used at the same time as O73. The conditions cannot occur together. Do not use with placenta accreta (O43.21-), placenta increta (O43.22-), or placenta percreta (O43.23-).

Medical necessity for intervention is established by the presence of retained placenta and/or membranes confirmed by examination or imaging. The goal is to prevent complications such as infection or hemorrhage.

Obstetricians and other healthcare professionals attending to childbirth manage this condition. It involves monitoring the patient's vital signs, examining the uterus, and taking appropriate measures to remove the retained tissues.

In simple words: After childbirth, the placenta and other tissues are supposed to come out of the uterus.Sometimes, these tissues, or parts of them, stay inside. This is called retained placenta or membranes. This code is used when there isn't a lot of bleeding along with it.

Retained placenta and membranes, without hemorrhage. This refers to a condition where the placenta, or parts of it, and/or membranes remain in the uterus after childbirth, without significant bleeding.

Example 1: A woman delivers a baby vaginally, but the placenta does not fully detach and remains partially attached to the uterine wall. There is no significant postpartum hemorrhage., Following a cesarean delivery, small fragments of the placental membranes are retained within the uterus. The patient shows no signs of excessive bleeding., After a normal vaginal delivery, the placenta is delivered, but a portion of the membranes is retained. The healthcare provider confirms the retention through examination, and the patient remains hemodynamically stable.

Documentation should include details of the delivery, the attempts to deliver the placenta, evidence of retained products (e.g., ultrasound findings, manual examination), and the absence of significant postpartum hemorrhage. The method used for removal of the retained products must also be documented.
