2025 ICD-10-CM code O9A.3

Physical abuse complicating pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium.

Code O9A.3 should only be used on maternal records, not on newborn records. Additional codes should always be used to specify any injuries or to identify the perpetrator of the abuse. This code excludes sexual abuse (O9A.4).

Medical necessity for treatment is established by the presence of physical injuries directly resulting from the abuse and the need for medical intervention to address these injuries. This includes but isn't limited to treatment for pain management, wound care, and other necessary procedures.Documentation of abuse is crucial for establishing medical necessity.

Obstetricians, gynecologists, family physicians, and other healthcare professionals involved in prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care should document and code this condition when applicable.Social workers and other relevant specialists may also contribute to assessment and care.

IMPORTANT:Use additional codes (if applicable) to identify any associated current injury due to physical abuse (T74.11 or T76.11) and to identify the perpetrator of abuse (Y07.-).This code should not be used if sexual abuse is the primary concern (use O9A.4 instead).

In simple words: This code is used when a pregnant woman, a woman giving birth, or a new mother is hurt because of physical abuse.Other codes might be used to describe the injuries or who caused the abuse.

This code classifies instances where physical abuse affects a pregnant individual, during childbirth, or in the postpartum period. It is crucial to differentiate this from other conditions that may overlap, and additional codes should be utilized as needed to specify associated injuries (using codes from category T74.11 or T76.11) or the perpetrator of the abuse (using codes from category Y07.-). This code is exclusively applied to maternal records and should not be used in newborn records.Excludes sexual abuse (O9A.4).
