2025 ICD-10-CM code P70.0

Syndrome of infant of mother with gestational diabetes.Newborn affected by maternal gestational diabetes.

This code is for use on the newborn's record only, not the mother's record. The code should only be assigned if there are documented manifestations of the syndrome in the infant. Hypoglycemia is a common manifestation but not the only criteria for this code.

Medical necessity is established by the infant's signs and symptoms and the mother's diagnosis of gestational diabetes. The documentation must support the diagnosis of the syndrome in the newborn and not just the maternal history.

The physician is responsible for documenting the infant's signs and symptoms related to maternal gestational diabetes, observing for potential complications such as hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, and macrosomia, and providing appropriate treatment and monitoring.

IMPORTANT:Excludes1: newborn (with hypoglycemia) affected by maternal (pre-existing) diabetes mellitus (P70.1).Use Z03.79 for observation of a newborn for suspected conditions related to maternal GDM when no manifestations are present in the infant.

In simple words: This code describes a condition where a baby is affected by diabetes that the mother developed during pregnancy (gestational diabetes). It is different from a baby affected by a mother who had diabetes before pregnancy.

Syndrome of infant of mother with gestational diabetes. This condition describes a newborn affected by maternal gestational diabetes and excludes newborn affected by maternal pre-existing diabetes mellitus (P70.1).

Example 1: A newborn infant exhibits hypoglycemia, macrosomia, and respiratory distress shortly after birth. The mother was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy. P70.0 is assigned., An infant born to a mother with gestational diabetes is asymptomatic but undergoes close monitoring for hypoglycemia. If hypoglycemia develops, P70.0 would be appropriate. If the infant remains asymptomatic and no effects are documented, assign Z03.79 instead., A baby is born with macrosomia. The mother has pre-existing type 2 diabetes.P70.1 (Syndrome of infant of a diabetic mother) is the correct code, not P70.0.

Documentation should include maternal history of gestational diabetes, the infant's clinical findings (e.g., hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, macrosomia, unstable blood sugars), and any treatment provided.
