2025 ICD-10-CM code S02.2

Fracture of nasal bones.

Use secondary code(s) from Chapter 20, External causes of morbidity, to indicate the cause of injury. Codes within the T section that include the external cause do not require an additional external cause code. Use additional code to identify any retained foreign body, if applicable (Z18.-).

The 7th character is required for this code to indicate the encounter type (initial encounter, subsequent encounter, or sequela).

Medical necessity is established by the presence of a fracture, confirmed by physical examination and imaging studies.Treatment is medically necessary to address the fracture and alleviate symptoms.

A patient with nasal fracture may present with nosebleed, bruising, swelling, tenderness, pain, and deformity of the nasal region of the face. Providers diagnose the condition on the basis of the patient’s personal history and physical examination and X–ray or CT scan, documenting the appearance of the injury with digital photographs. Treatment options include stopping any bleeding, elevating the head, and applying cold compresses to the nose while waiting for swelling to subside, followed by manual alignment or surgical repair at a later date; medication such as analgesics or NSAIDs; surgical repair if necessary.

In simple words: A broken bone in the nose.

Fracture of nasal bones.A fracture not indicated as open or closed should be coded to closed.

Example 1: A patient presents to the emergency room after being hit in the face with a basketball.Physical examination and X-ray confirm a closed fracture of the nasal bones., A patient falls off a bicycle and lands on their face, resulting in a fractured nose.A CT scan reveals a fracture of the nasal bones, with no involvement of the skull or other facial bones., A patient is involved in a motor vehicle accident and sustains multiple injuries, including a fracture of the nasal bones. The fracture is documented as closed. Imaging studies rule out associated intracranial injury.

Documentation should include details of the injury, physical examination findings, imaging results (X-ray or CT scan), and treatment provided. If applicable, document associated injuries.

** Code also any associated intracranial injury (S06.-).Excludes1: birth trauma (P10-P15), obstetric trauma (O70-O71).
