This code is for non-Medicare payers.Medicare does not accept S codes.Ensure documentation supports the amount of TPN billed (1-2 liters per day).

Medical necessity for TPN must be documented.Conditions such as non-functioning GI tract, short bowel syndrome, or the need for complete bowel rest justify the use of TPN. Supporting clinical documentation should clearly demonstrate the patient's inability to obtain adequate nutrition through other means.

Administering and monitoring TPN therapy, including ensuring appropriate venous access, maintaining sterile technique, and coordinating care with other healthcare professionals.

S9366 is billed daily for the TPN, supplies, and services. Nursing visits and any additional medications are billed separately., A patient recovering from major bowel surgery requires complete bowel rest and receives 1.8 liters of standard TPN formula daily at home.S9366 is billed for each day of TPN., A patient with Crohn's disease experiencing a severe flare-up requires TPN while their bowel heals. They receive 1.2 liters of standard TPN formula daily at home. S9366 is billed for each day they receive the TPN. If they require a lipid supplement, it's billed separately.

Medical record documentation should include the diagnosis necessitating TPN, the type and amount of TPN formula administered, the method and frequency of administration (e.g., continuous infusion via central venous catheter), and any complications or adverse reactions.
