2025 ICD-10-CM code T40.7

Poisoning by, adverse effect of, and underdosing of cannabis (derivatives).

Use a secondary code from Chapter 20 (External causes of morbidity) to indicate the cause of the injury. If a foreign body is retained, use code Z18.-.

Medical necessity must be established for the evaluation and treatment of cannabis-related poisoning, adverse effects, or underdosing. This includes documenting the severity of the patient's condition and the need for medical intervention.

Clinicians are responsible for documenting the type of cannabis exposure (poisoning, adverse effect, or underdosing), the specific substance involved, the route of exposure, and the clinical manifestations.

In simple words: This code represents problems caused by using too much or too little cannabis, or having a bad reaction to it.

This code encompasses poisoning by, adverse effect of, and underdosing of cannabis and its derivatives. It includes adverse effects from correctly administered cannabis, overdose, and unintentional or intentional underdosing.

Example 1: A patient presents to the emergency department with symptoms of cannabis overdose, including anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations, after consuming a large quantity of edibles., A patient experiences an allergic reaction (e.g., skin rash, itching) after using a topical cannabis product., A patient on a prescribed cannabis regimen for chronic pain unintentionally takes less than the prescribed dose and experiences withdrawal symptoms.

Documentation should include the type of cannabis product involved (e.g., edible, smoked, topical), quantity or dosage, route of administration or exposure, time of exposure, and the patient's presenting symptoms. If an adverse effect is suspected, the relationship between cannabis use and the adverse effect should be clearly documented.
