Use additional code to identify airbag injury (W22.1), type of street or road (Y92.4-), and use of cellular telephone and other electronic equipment at the time of the transport accident (Y93.C-).

Use 7th character to specify initial encounter (A), subsequent encounter (D), or sequela (S).

Medical necessity is established by the injuries sustained as a result of the transport accident.

In simple words: This code signifies that a person was injured in a transport accident while occupying a pick-up truck, van, minibus, minivan, SUV, or similar vehicle. This excludes accidents involving heavy transport vehicles or those occurring during maintenance, assault, self-harm, or cataclysmic events.

Example 1: A patient was a passenger in an SUV that was involved in a collision with another vehicle at a traffic signal. The patient sustained a whiplash injury., A driver of a minivan lost control on an icy road and hit a tree. The driver sustained a broken arm and lacerations., A passenger riding in the back of a pick-up truck was ejected from the vehicle when the truck was involved in a rollover accident. The passenger sustained multiple fractures and internal injuries.

Documentation should clearly specify the type of vehicle the patient was occupying (pick-up truck, van, minibus, minivan, or SUV), the circumstances of the accident, and the injuries sustained.
