A Z code should not be used as a primary diagnosis. A procedure code should accompany a Z code if a procedure is performed. Code also any follow-up examination (Z08-Z09)

Code Z97 is used to document the presence of a device that may influence the patient's health status.It is not used for billing purposes for the device itself, but to provide context for other diagnoses or procedures.

In simple words: This code indicates the presence of a medical device in a patient's body, excluding internal prosthetic devices, implants, grafts, cerebrospinal fluid drainage devices, and the fitting and adjustment of prosthetic devices.

Presence of other devices

Example 1: A patient with a permanent pacemaker presents for a routine check-up. The pacemaker is functioning normally. Code Z97 is used to indicate the presence of the pacemaker., A patient has an indwelling urinary catheter.Code Z97 is used to document the presence of the catheter., A patient with an insulin pump presents for diabetes management. Code Z97 is used to indicate the presence of the insulin pump.

Documentation should specify the type of device present.
